This material was proposed thinking to overlap the problems found in conventional composite resins, which have the negative point the polymerization contraction stress. This new material presents changes in its chemical composition, such as monomeric modification and the initiator system, in order to generate less polymerization contraction. Materials containing resin, which are used in restorative dentistry, have the potential to create local or systemic reactions on tissues such as the pulp, gingiva and oral mucosa. When adhesive resins are applied directly on the pulp, infection or necrosis generally occurs. This is because the organic matrix of the adhesives contains components which may have a cytotoxic effect. These components have also been reported to cause allegic skin problems in the patient or in dentistry personnel. P. atlantica and H. perforatum have long been known for their anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties as an alternative medicine. This study evaluated the healing effects of extraction of P. atlantica and H. perforatum, on 5-FU induced oral mucositis in golden hamsters by histopathology, clinically, and anti-oxidative assessments.
