Juniper Publishers- Open Access Journal of Dentistry & Oral Health Dental Caries Prevalence and Severity among Deaf and Hearing Impaired Male Students in Eastern Saudi Arabia- Juniper Publishers Authored by Hashim al-naser Abstract Objectives: To assess dental caries prevalence and severity in hearing-impaired (HI) and deaf adolescent male students in Eastern Saudi Arabia. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted of 109 male students (46 HI and 63 deaf) between the ages 12-18 yrs.The students were compared with 218 control students with no hearing disabilities. Two trained examiners carried out clinical examinations to assess the prevalence of dental caries using the Decayed, Missing, Filled surfaces (DMF/S) index. Data were analyzed by age category (12-14yrs, >14-16yrs, and >16-18yrs) and by hearing disability. The DMF/S index was dichotomized at the 75th percentile to determine the severity of denta...

Juniper Publishers- Open Access Journal of Dentistry & Oral Health Challenge Management of Oral Lichenoid Drug Reaction- Juniper Publishers Authored by Kobkan Thongprasom Review Medications have been extensively used for the treatment of patients with systemic diseases; however, some of those drugs may have side-effects to the oral cavity or other organs [ 1 ]. Clinicians and oral medicine specialists should thoroughly assess the patients' systemic diseases, current medications and previous medication use when lesions first appeared in the oral cavities. Red and white oral lesions in the patients could be diagnosed as oral lichen planus (OLP), oral lichenoid drug reaction (OLDR), OLP/ Lupus erythematosus (LE), immune complex mediated disease, chronic ulcerative stomatitis-like diseases (CUS-like diseases) and etc. [2,3]. Previous reviews have demonstrated that many drugs can induce OLDR [4-7] (Table 1). Nevertheless, management of such oral ...

Juniper Publishers- Open Access Journal of Dentistry & Oral Health Salivary Glucose: A Metabolic Disease Marker and a Risk Factor for Oral Disease Development- Juniper Publishers Authored by J Max Goodson Abstract The existence of glucose in saliva as a step in development of metabolic disease including diabetes has not received adequate recognition as an oral disease risk factor. Hyperglycemia, the driving function for appearance of salivary glucose is rare in children and appears mainly in adulthood. The presence of salivary glucose modifies salivary microbial composition and affects both dental caries and gingivitis. Data on salivary pH as a surrogate measure is reviewed to suggest that pH indicator paper could serve as a surrogate chairside diagnostic of hyperglycemia. Keywords: Glucose, Saliva; Hyperglycemia; Dental caries, Gingivitis Hyperglycemia H...

Juniper Publishers- Open Access Journal of Dentistry & Oral Health To Deliver Great Service you Need to Adopt A CSI Mindset- Juniper Publishers Authored by Julie Lyons-Wolfe Opinion Have you ever experienced the phantom car noise? You know what I am talking about. Those times in which a strange sound would emanate from under the hood, only to disappear the moment you drove it into the garage to be checked. Finally, and after countless trips back and forth to the shop, a light bulb would finally go off and your mechanic would discover the source of the noise, and repair the problem. In more cases than not, in turned out that the origin of the noise was totally unrelated to what the manuals had indicated. Most people would call this an A-HA moment. I personally prefer to call it a CSI moment. Why CSI? Because you are dealing with a mystery that requires a combination of expertise, gut instinct and an investigative perseveran...

Juniper Publishers-Open Access Journal of Dentistry & Oral Health Abstract An implant restoration in the anterior area requires careful management of soft and hard tissues due to biological, functional and aesthetics requisites. The use of provisional restorations is necessary to create a proper emergence profile and mimic the natural dentition and their supporting gingival tissues. It also contributes to the health of peri-implant tissues and facilitates to perform a correct oral hygiene. Transferring the shape of the created emergence profile is key to fabricating the proper final restoration. This report describes a direct technique to take a final impression of an implant-supported bridge. Impression abutments and flowable composite resin were used to fill the gingival emergence profile and obtain a precise master model cast. Keywords: Emergence profile; Implant; Pontic; flowable composite resins ...
